"Nothing I have tried has stopped the hairloss"

Is this you?? It was me too.

Let's talk hair loss ladies. Openly and honestly.

My hair loss journey has been long...I first started having hair loss years ago. I was sitting in my office chair and every time I left my chair all I would leave behind was a seat full of hair strands, I was in my 30s and to be honest I did not take much notice. Too engrossed in life to care and I had so much hair that I just overlooked it. I noticed that over the course of just 8 weeks I had lost nearly half a head of hair.

As I looked in the mirror and plaited my hair into a nighttime plait, it filled less of the palm of my hand that it used to. This is where my hair loss journey began. To be honest I was frantically researching products online to regrow my hair and none of it worked so I accepted that this was another part of my journey. I saw it as a test to accept and love myself as I am.

"It is hard enough going through the Peri, without losing me hair too" Anon client

However I did become more aware of stress and started to really invest in my self care with Yoga and pranayama practice, this helped my mindset towards my hair and the hair loss did stop eventually.

Then...the bloody peri-menopause hit me and I noticed that I was losing the volume and thickness of my hair. This time I was like 'NO' not this time. This time I will not accept defeat, "I love myself enough to DO something about it"

So I did.....

Yes!! Soma. Get on with it, I hear you say.

Firstly ladies, let me assure you that there is or 'are' solutions but it is not a one stop shop. (well it was not for me, if you find that one stop shop solution then please share!!)

There are two types of hair loss: Loss from the root or loss from weak hair. I will give solutions for both.

We are all our own unique blend of hormones, experiences, emotions and biology which is why many products on the market work for some people but may not work for you. So when your pal has an amazing product that works wonders for her but when you try it, feck all happens, do not blame or criticise yourself. You just haven't quite found out what is going on with you.

After trying the many products on and off the shelves, from hair loss products to desi hair oils, the lovely AMLA oil and lets face it that stuff can smell pretty awful and to be honest brings back too many childhood memories of being bullied for having stinky hair.

My approach started with mindset, so I began with the core wounds around hair loss which is ....low self worth, safety and security, inflexibility in your thinking and inadequacy and of course this is also where we hold stress and tension. I used EFT (Emotional Freedom Therapy)to work out these core beliefs.

On a physical level, I balanced my hormones with pranayama (scan QR code above) as well as made up some homemade hair oils which I began massaging into my hair regularly before I wash my hair. Castor oil is a must in your hair oils and honestly made the biggest difference!

I binned all the shampoos and products with the nasty toxic ingredients opting for sulphate free brands. There are loads on the shelves these days and this is a bit of a trial and error process.

I started taking iron, zinc and biotin supplements, also opt for a good peri-menopause supplement. Some options:

Solgar - they do a whole range for women

Shilligit supplements- find a good brand

Ashwagandha supplements - there are drops and tablets, great to release stress

Free Soul- organic and pure products created for women

For hair breakage a good protein bonding products are ideal (K18 is great but expensive)

For hair fall out from the root I do suggest a visit to the GP to check you are not deficient in any nutrients etc.

There are many hair grow products that you can get over the counter.

Honestly this is just a snapshot, and I wish it was easier than this but I guess you decide if it is important enough for you to invest this much time and energy into your hair care routine. It takes commitment and perseverance.

My hair never returned to what it was when I was 30 and that is the part of the evolution of my hair journey but I am much happier with my hair than I was a year or two ago and I learned to embrace my curly hair.
